Water Weed or Pond Weed

[Elodea canadensis]

Location and climate
Lakes, rivers and streams ( fresh water)

Origins from North America but now water weed grows in Asia, Europe, Australia and Africa where it is considered an invasive species.

The common reason for water weed to end up in new areas is when people empty their aquarium into a lake or river.

Usage
Aquarium plant and fertiliser.

In Copenhagen 5 lakes are harvested 2 times a year to reduce the amount of pond weed.

The amount of 350-600 tons are used for soil improvement by a farmer.

The plant wither quickly when taken from the water and is very fragile.
